ATHLETIC SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION

Americanism Essay Winners Announced

The Groton Lodge of Elks #2163 recently held an essay contest for local elementary students.  The Americanism Essay contest, sponsored by the Elks Grand Lodge on a national level, involves school children in grades 5-8.  By giving them the opportunity to express their views on America and what being a patriotic citizen means, the Americanism Committee seeks to stimulate a genuine feeling of pride and respect toward patriotism.  The theme for the 2010-2011 Americanism Essay contest is “Why I am Proud to be an American”.  Winners from Groton were announced and awarded prizes at a spaghetti dinner on February 9, 2011 at the Lodge.  Each of the three winners received an American Flag, an award certificate and a Borders gift card.  The following winners were recognized:  first place - Jameson T., Sacred Heart School; second place – Shenandoah T., Sacred Heart School; and third place - Cassidy M., Mary Morrison School.  Their essays are being forwarded to the district level for further consideration.
