Safe
Kids Connecticut with sponsorship from the Southington Elks
Lodge #1669 held another successful car seat clinic on Saturday,
March 29th at the Plantsville Fire department.
"Since 1992, Safe Kids Connecticut has been a statewide network
of people and organizations who work together to prevent
childhood injury. Safe Kids Connecticut and its partners have
distributed child safety materials and educational materials to
raise awareness regarding this number one threat to children:
unintentional injury. We cover a variety of issue including:
Car seat and Motor Vehicle Safety Bicycle Safety Pedestrian
Safety
Water Safety Poison Safety Fall Safety
Playground Safety Sports Safety Burn Safety
There is no one safety device or advice that can prevent all
types of childhood injury. However, as many as 90% of childhood
injuries can be prevented. Safe Kids Connecticut has a
multi-faceted program to reduce death and injury.

Karen Brock, Director of Safe Kids Connecticut states "The
Southington Elks donate on average 15 to 20 seats a year and
have for the past 9 years. I think one of the best things about
that is that the donated seats are used for people who either
can't afford the seat or need a seat NOW to get their child home
safely. It is such a great resource for the community."
One of the other nice things about the relationship between the
Elks and Safe Kids is that the Elks have really embraced the
safety message and this is a wide range of child safety, not
just car seats. For example, the Southington Elks have held bike
rodeos where each child receives a free helmet, making sure it
is properly fitted and then teaching the rules of the road and
other bike safety issues. They also have had safety materials at
their "open house" during Apple Fest. Which is great,
considering the traffic that the Elks Lodge attracts at the
Fest."
Surprisingly,
basic safety devices like booster seats and bike helmets aren't
required in most states -- 31 fail to mandate one or both of
them. "Having a law is essential, even if you wouldn't dream of
putting your preschooler in the car without a booster seat,"
says Alan Korn, director of public policy for Safe Kids
Worldwide, an advocacy group in Washington, D.C. "Not only does
a law educate parents who might not be as safety-conscious as
you, but it also makes it easier for you to handle protests from
your kids. When my 7-year-old says he's too big for a bike
helmet, I just remind him that it's the law. Argument over.""

Over
this past weekend (Sunday, March 16th) the Southington Elks
Lodge 1669 sponsored the annual Children's Easter Egg Hunt. With
over 40 children in attendance, eggs filled with sweets were
scattered around the Lodge waiting for the children to find
them. The children had the opportunity to gather as many eggs
their baskets could hold, as well as find the special eggs which
won them a free prize at the Prize Station. A free buffet was
served while festivities included make-your-own baskets,
coloring and face painting stations. Highlights included an
Easter egg coloring/decorating station where the children
demonstrated just how creative they could be!
