12th Annual Golf Tournament Success

By Charles 'Chic' Rhodes, Jr. PER, State Golf Chairman

On May 11, 2011, the Connecticut State Elks held their 12th annual golf tournament.  We had 123 golfers participate in this year’s event and enjoy the dinner that followed at Southington Lodge #1669.

This year we again had a tie for 1st place; New Haven Lodge #25 and Windsor Lodge #2060.  For the second year in a row Windsor Lodge takes second place with New Haven Lodge winning by matching cards.  Both Lodges were tied at 12 under par after play at the Hawk’s Landing Country Club.

I would like to thank PSP Tim Angell for donating a Bullseye putter that he made, Tom Gangi for the donation of a wedge and Paul Salisbury for donating golf balls.  All of these prizes were greatly appreciated.

This year we were able to raise over $4,700 for the States Major Project, the Connecticut’s Children’s Medical Center. Great job to those who helped make this possible.

Here are the final standings:  -12 New Haven & Windsor, -11 Naugatuck, Waterbury, Manchester, Willimantic, -10 Waterbury, -8 Windsor, -7 Groton, -6 Winsted, Wethersfield/Rocky Hill, Wethersfield/Rocky Hill, -5 Branford, Wethersfield/Rocky Hill, Windsor, New Britain, Waterbury, Milford, -4 Southington, Rockville, Putnam, -3 Danbury, -1 New London, Naugatuck, Waterbury, Bridgeport, +1 Danbury, Past State Presidents, +4 Winsted.  Longest Drive went to Tim Robinson and the Closest to the Pin was Rich Winarski.

I would also like to thank the District Chairmen: East - SVP Mike Barta, PDD - Coastal -Paul Salisbury, PER - Central - John Romano, PER and Northwest - Tim Angell PSP, PDD.

Again thanks to all who helped make a very successful day!

Clubs for Kids Program

Once again the Youth Activities Committee of the Connecticut Elks Association, is participating in a program called "Clubs for Kids".

The object of this program is to collect old & no-longer used golf clubs. The clubs would be cleaned up, re-gripped and re-sized by the PGA. This will allow young boys and girls to experience golf at a local driving range or Par 3 course for the first time with their own clubs. This program would be run in parallel with the CT Elks Jr. Golf Program and with the CT Section of PGA Jr. Golf.

Please Clean out your cellar, attics and garages and leave the requested golf equipment at the Lodge.  Once Lodges have collected them, please contact myself or their district chairman and arrangements will be made to pick them up.  Our deadline is July 21st.

Thank You for Your Support!

Former Chariman Charles Lusk with some young golfers!

Yes, that is a pile of golf clubs on the table!
