Grand Lodge Ritualistic Report

Congratulations to the State Champion Ritual Team from Connecticut, Danielson Lodge #1706, for placing 9th in the East at the Grand Lodge Ritual Contest in Orlando, Florida. As State Ritual Chairman and one of the coaches of the team, I was very proud of their performance and even more proud seeing 60 plus members from our great State show up to watch the team and give their support. I can’t ‘Thank You’ all enough for the fantastic turnout!

A special ‘Tip of the Antlers’ to Loyal Knight, Steve Hegedus who placed 2nd in the East, missing the All American award by a mere .226 points. Well done Steve!

I hope in the years to come, members from Connecticut will continue to show the kind of support they did this year for all the teams representing Connecticut at the Grand Lodge Ritual Contest.

Ritual Overview

What is this Ritual?  Why is it so important?  It is our roots and how we all became Elks.  Unique and ornate, it distinctly separates us from other organizations.  It was our first inkling that this Order into which we joined was organized and professional and one which we would strive to help in its endeavors.

Learning the officer's parts for the initiation does take a little time, some chairs more than others.  Be sure to think of it as LEARNING your part not MEMORIZING it!!  Just consider for a moment how young you were when you learned the Pledge of Allegiance or perhaps your bedtime prayers.  It takes a little commitment and the Ritualistic Committee stands ready to assist any Lodge or any member.  Remember, you will never have another chance to make a good first impression on your new members!  If you want them to be active and further propose new members, here's your chance to set them off right!

Some tips in learning the Ritual:

  • Read your part over a few times and take the meaning from it before trying to commit it to memory.  It is much easier to learn and convey something which you understand rather than memorizing and regurgitating.  If you should happen to stumble in some area, you can still give the intended meaning of the passage and the candidate will still be impressed.

  • Make a cassette tape / CD for yourself which you can use on your drives to work, to the store, etc. Familiarity is the easiest way to learn.

  • Make arrangements to meet with other officers and do some "run-throughs".  It's a lot different in front of someone than it is in your car and its more beneficial to all!

  • Ask your district Ritual Committeeperson to come down to your lodge and help pull things together; that's his  job!

  • For your District Deputy Visitation: ask the DD for an outline from the District Deputy detailing his required protocol.  Meet with the Esquire to the District Deputy and/or your Ritual Committeeperson to go over these requirements.

LODGE COMPETITIONS

The Connecticut Ritualistic Contest was held on Sunday, March 5th at Hartford Lodge #19. We had two teams perform representing Danielson Lodge and Manchester Lodge.  Danielson went on at 9:00 am, Manchester at 10:00 am.  Both teams performed admirably!!  Any candidate would have sure been so impressed as to have run out and sign up 12 new members!!!! (Editor / Judge comment)

There were coffee and donuts first thing in the morning  courtesy Hartford Lodge and lunch was served at noon. The judges were: floor judges are Bill Stone and Jay Niland, along with three judges from Rhode Island. Word judges were Don Bunnell and Art Shepherd.  In the computer room were be Bill Chinn and Dennis DiMauro.

Many Elks attended this event to see what a ritual competition was like and to support the Officers and Lodges who took the time to learn their parts so well.  When the proverbial dust had settled, Danielson Lodge was the victor besting Manchester by just-over 3 points and will represent the state of Connecticut at the Grand Lodge Ritualistic competition!  Congratulation to your Lodge and to Manchester for a very fine performance and all of the collective work from both teams!

One of the two Area-1 competitions (That's all of New England and New York state) in which we take part, both under the auspices of our Interstate Relations committee.  One is the Area-One PER Competition and the other is the Area- One Roulette Competition.  The "Roulette" competition is one where the four Chair Officers do not know the part in which they will compete until directly before they enter the Lodge Room!!

Both of these are friendly contests which give those interested in the Ritual a chance to get together with their families and fellow Elk participants for a weekend away.  Typically these competitions are held on a Sunday.  The hosting Lodge will typically have a dinner or a function on Saturday.  The Interstate Relations Committee normally has a hospitality suite at the hotel where all visiting state teams stay where those involved can meet and socialize.

The Area 1 PER Ritual Contest will be held on Sunday April 29, 2007 at Danielson, CT Lodge #1706. number of the Lodge is (207) 784-4801. For Hotel and Lodge information please click on the following link:
