Ritual Overview

What is this Ritual?  Why is it so important?  It is our roots and how we all became Elks.  Unique and ornate, it distinctly separates us from other organizations.  It was our first inkling that this Order into which we joined was organized and professional and one which we would strive to help in its endeavors.

Learning the officer's parts for the initiation does take a little time, some chairs more than others.  Be sure to think of it as LEARNING your part not MEMORIZING it!!  Just consider for a moment how young you were when you learned the Pledge of Allegiance or perhaps your bedtime prayers.  It takes a little commitment and the Ritualistic Committee stands ready to assist any Lodge or any member.  Remember, you will never have another chance to make a good first impression on your new members!  If you want them to be active and further propose new members, here's your chance to set them off right!

Some tips in learning the Ritual:

  • Read your part over a few times and take the meaning from it before trying to commit it to memory.  It is much easier to learn and convey something which you understand rather than memorizing and regurgitating.  If you should happen to stumble in some area, you can still give the intended meaning of the passage and the candidate will still be impressed.

  • Make a cassette tape / CD for yourself which you can use on your drives to work, to the store, etc. Familiarity is the easiest way to learn.

  • Make arrangements to meet with other officers and do some "run-throughs".  It's a lot different in front of someone than it is in your car and its more beneficial to all!

  • Ask your district Ritual Committeeperson to come down to your lodge and help pull things together; that's his  job!

  • For your District Deputy Visitation: ask the DD for an outline from the District Deputy detailing his required protocol.  Meet with the Esquire to the District Deputy and/or your Ritual Committeeperson to go over these requirements.
