New Britain Lodge #957 donated $200 to defer expenses so the Veterans of the Rocky Hill and Newington VA Hospitals in Connecticut can be treated to the entertainment of “Re-Creation”, who has been cited as “AMERICA’S AMBASSADORS to HOSPITALIZED VETERANS”. “Re-Creation” has been serving across our nation in VA Medical Centers and State Veterans Homes for 40 years!

New Britain Lodge #957 Honors Veterans

by Don Woscyna, DDGER - NW District

The New Britain Elks Lodge #957 held a Veterans Memorial Service at the Hospital for Special Care in New Britain. 35 people attended, including patients and employees of the hospital who are veterans, family members and friends.

Officiating the ceremony were Robert Ferone Sr., PDD, LM, Donald Woscyna, DDGER, and Peter Moran, LM and Trustee. Performing taps was James Caplik, lodge member #957. The prayer and Pledge of Allegiance was led by Hospital Chaplain Tom Anderson, US Army Reserve. At the conclusion of the speaking portion of the  program, a wreath was placed at the base of the flagpole by the Elks members, and taps was performed.

At the conclusion of the program, all veterans in attendance were presented with Elk pins of appreciation for their service.

Each veteran was personally given a pin and thanked by the New Britain Elk Lodge members.

Several patients were unable to be brought to the hospital lobby for the ceremony, and the Lodge Officers were brought to several patients rooms by staff, and the patients were presented pins and thanked for their service to our Country.

A total of 25 pins were presented. This was the first Veterans Day Service conducted at the Hospital for Special Care, and the service was very successful. Lodge Officers Robert Ferone and Donald Woscyna are security officers employed at the hospital, and it was decided to bring the Veterans Day Service to those veterans who were unable to leave the hospital due to medical conditions.

We would like to thank the Administration and staff of the Hospital for Special Care for their enthusiastic support of our idea to bring this Veterans Day Service to HSC and honor patients and employees who are veterans.
